The Orange Coast Magazine Interview is out!!

So awhile back I blogged about this awesome photo shoot I did for an upcoming interview in my local glossy, Orange Coast magazine--and it's finally out!!

Amazing photographer, Jen Rosenstein and I holed up in the Laguna Beach High School Girl's Locker room for hours--and when the freshman girl's soccer team came in, we decided to include them, and this is the shot they chose!!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE it!! It's perfect! Which, trust me, has way more to do with Jen's amazing abilities than anything I contributed!!

If you don't get Orange Coast and want to read the interview just click HERE.

Also, if you're heading out to CondorCon today, be sure and stop by the Dealers Room at noon, I'll be signing copies of EVERMORE and would love to meet you!  I'm also taking part in a couple panels, one on: When Does Genre Fiction Become Literature? (I'm hoping I'll learn the answer to that since I've no idea!), and: Writing YA Fantasy, at 3:00 and 4:00 respectively, both in the Balboa room.

For more info on CondorCon click HERE.

But whatever you do this weekend-- be sure to have fun!!

Viva Las Vegas!!!

Just got back from a fun-filled, action packed, two nights in Vegas where we stayed here:

Saw this:

Lost $20 playing this:

Ate more meals than I care to admit, which meant I had to spend some time in here:

All to celebrate my BFF's combined birthday and very recent engagement, as well as EVERMORE making the NYT & USA Today bestseller lists (#4 & #64 this week, respectively!) and the TV rights being sold.

(This photo was not taken in Vegas, it's from a 60's party a few years back, and she may kill me for posting it but I think she looks cute!)

Anyway, it was the perfect getaway--the weather was good, the company great . . . but now I'm afraid it's back to work on UNTITLED BOOK #3 (still no official title!)

But, for those of you attending the CONDOR XVI, San Diego's longest running Sci-fi and Fantasy convention, I'll be signing copies of EVERMORE in the Dealer's Room, this Saturday, February 28, 2009 at noon and would love to see you there!  Please note, there is an admission fee to attend so for more information click HERE.

Have a fun weekend everyone!

GCC Presents . . .a Jennifer Banash free book giveaway!!

This week, I'm thrilled to host awesome YA author/self described shoe fanatic, Jennifer Banash, whose second book in her ELITE series, IN TOO DEEP, was just released!! And lucky for us, she was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions.

And she's also giving away a signed copy of IN TOO DEEP to the person who comments with the best Valentine's Day story!

 But first:

THE STORY:

If you don’t belong here— you just don’t belong…

The Bramford building’s newest resident and small-town transplant Casey McCloy is adapting to life in the Big Apple and loving it. She’s got the look, the attitude, and a delish new boyfriend, Drew Van Allen. But she’s starting to have second thoughts as to whether the “New York” Casey is the real Casey. And she’s not so sure she likes herself much anymore. She’s not the only one.

Madison Macallister has always had her Manolo Blahniks firmly planted on the top rung of the social ladder—until that corn-fed cow Casey stole Drew away from her and made her look the fool. So what if Madison wasn’t exactly dating Drew at the time? She wanted him. And everyone knows that Madison gets what she wants, like Drew—and a little revenge.

Praise For THE ELITE series, and IN TOO DEEP:

“The Elite is Pretty in Pink for the millennium generation.”
—Romance Reviews Today

What's a Normal, Illinois girl to do when she enters the world of New York City's rich and bitchy? Hold tight, because this is one drama-filled ride."
--Melissa Walker, author of Violet on the Runway.

"In Too Deep is a seductive read."
—Innovative: A Word for the WriTeen Blog

“Fans of the drama, romance, gossip, and privileged lifestyle depicted in Gossip Girl and Blue Bloods will be drawn to In Too Deep... In Too Deep continues to showcase the glitzy and glamorous lifestyle of New York City’s privileged teens...Banash’s Elite series continues to rock above the rest.”
—The Compulsive Reader Blog

“As you know, life in the posh and drama-filled Upper East Side is never easy! Hold onto your Hermes scarves and Coach handbags, the Bram Clan is back for more action and drama!”
—The Book Vault Blog

“Banash is fabulous at creating relatable characters in over-the-top situations.”
—In Bed With Books Blog

The same questions I always ask:

1. Every story has a backstory, what's the backstory for your book?

I was working as a ghost writer for a bestselling YA series, and having a great time, but something kept nagging at me, the thought that, "You know, I could do this better!" Sounds conceited, but it's 100% true. I knew the terrain the series was covering intimately, and I was interested in the stories that were NOT getting told.

2. What's your work environment like? Any rituals, totems, or must haves?

I work at the kitchen table! I've tried having a desk, but I just can't do it. There's something downright magical about the kitchen table for me. The only other place I work is a local coffee house. But no matter where I am, I HAVE to have some kind of cakey-muffiney treat to reward myself after a few pages . . . or sentences . . .:)

3. What book rocked your world growing up?

Less Than Zero, by Bret Easton Ellis. I read it and thought "Awesome. Someone feels as alienated and disconnected as me!" I was not a happy camper as a teenager, LOL! Also, I was obsessed with the Sweet Valley High books (the original series) when I was around 11--just OBSESSED. I still collect the SVH's with the original covers all these years later. (I felt the same way about CATCHER IN THE RYE--too bad I didn't know you then!- Alyson)

4. If you could visit any time, place, or person- what, where, or who would it be?
I would like to go back and spend time in old-time Hollywood--really see inside the old studio system and hang out with stars like Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, and Marilyn Monroe. The time just represents glamour, intrigue, and the most delicious scandal.

Jennifer's Story:

Jennifer Banash attended high school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and currently lives in Southern California with her Beagle, Sigmund, and her vast designer shoe collection. She is the author of THE ELITE series, published by Berkley Jam. Watch for the third installment of THE ELITE, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE, coming in July 09!

V-Day Weekend!

So, I just learned that an interview I did with the Laguna Beach Independent a few weeks ago came out today, you can read it HERE.

And, the New York Times Bestseller list was also made available today, you can see that HERE.

And, in all of this week's excitement, I somehow failed to notice that FRIDAY THE 13th backs right up to VALENTINE'S DAY??!!

How can this be?

Do love and horror really mix?

Hmmm, thinking back on my earlier, more single years, it appears that they do!!

Anyway, I plan to spend the weekend writing and hopefully coming up with a good title for the next book in the IMMORTALS series, since apparently UNTITLED BOOK #3 did not go over so well with the marketing folks as I'd hoped.

Oh, well.

What about you?? Any exciting weekend plans??? Or, if you just want to riff on love and horror, feel free to do that as well!!

Me, I'm all about the LOVE--so:

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY EVERYONE!!!!

Champagne Supernova

Yes, it's true. There was a bit of champagne drinking last night, and while the headache lingers, it was still totally worth it!!

Anyway, just wanted you to know that I'm blogging at The Cafe today, so feel free to stop by and say hello!!

And giving away a signed copy of EVERMORE Here.

Oh, and I also wanted to make it clear that EVERMORE's placement on the New York Times Bestseller list is for the week of 2/22. Publishers get the news a week and a half before it appears in the paper and online, which is something I didn't know until now!

Anyway, thanks again for all of your congrats--it means the world to me!!

Have a great day everone!

GCC Presents . . . Wendy Toliver!!

Okay, not only is she tall, slim, and completely gorgeous--but she also happens to be one of the nicest people you could possibly meet! I was lucky enough to hang out with the awesome Wendy Toliver at last summer's RWA conference, so I consider myself to be a pretty good authority on this!

Anyway, her latest book, MISS MATCH, is officially released on February 10th (though I've already seen it nicely displayed in every bookstore I've been to this week!) and Wendy was kind enough to stop by and tell us a little bit about it!

Here's the story:

Simon and Schuster releases Eden resident’s second YA novel right in time for Valentine’s Day. Filled with romance, humor, and fun local references, Miss Match is sure to delight young adults and adults alike.

Sasha Finnegan has always had a knack for setting people up, and at sixteen, she's turned her talent into an online business, molding high school crushes into true love. But Sasha finds her toughest match yet when hottie Derek Urban asks her to set him up with Sasha's gorgeous sister, Maddie. It's not that Derek isn't a good catch. In fact, after spending so much time with him, Sasha can't help but think he's perfect -- for her, that is.

Can Sasha push her feelings aside for the sake of her business? Or has this miss finally found her match?

More Info about Miss Match:

Miss Match is Wendy Toliver’s second Simon Pulse Romantic Comedy. It was a 2007 finalist in the Romance Writers’ of America© Golden Heart® contest in the Young Adult category (under the title Cupid Girl). “What I like best about this book is that it’s about a smart, funny, down-to-earth sixteen year-old who isn’t super skinny and drop-dead gorgeous. It takes place in Salt Lake City, close to where I live, so I was able to weave some fun local aspects into it.” --Wendy Toliver

Here's the same 5 questions I always ask:

Every story has a backstory, what's the backstory for your book?

I’ve always loved fixing people up. I still do! (By the way, if anyone out there is interested in meeting my 29 year-old brother who lives in Orlando or my adorable mom who lives in Denver, leave a comment. Haha) Also, my sister and I have a great relationship and though we might not have always seen eye-to-eye growing up, we always came through for each other like Sasha and Maddie do in Miss Match.

What's your work environment like? Any rituals, totems, or must haves?

As of recently, I don’t drink Diet Coke, which used to be my staple. Now I just sip green tea (iced) or Celestial Seasonings “Tension Tamer” (hot) or water, and perhaps a glass of red wine while writing.

I love my home office. It’s a great color (cranberry) and comfy and I’m surrounded by my favorite things, from books signed by my author friends to my voodoo and Bratz doll collections to family photos and cards and gifts from friends and fans.

If you could live inside any book-- which would it be?

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Definitely. Or maybe Oh the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Or how about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Oh, man. Too many to list!

What book rocked your world growing up?

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Edwards, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, and Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume.

If you could visit any time, place, or person- what, where, or who would it be?

Oh wow, hard question. If I didn’t have to stay there, I think I’d like to visit Woodstock summer o’’69. But that’s because I’m in a “party” mood right now.

Wendy's Story:
Wendy Toliver lives in the Utah mountains with her three little boys, her husband, and other various wildlife. She graduated from Colorado State University with a BA in Speech Communication/Broadcast and has had a variety of jobs, from performing singing telegrams to working at an advertising agency.

Now a soccer (etc.) mom and the author of The Secret Life of a Teenage Siren and Miss Match (both Simon Pulse), she couldn’t be happier. Well, if she had a self-cleaning house, a Porsche, and an endless supply of chocolate-covered cinnamon bears, she just might be a tad happier. Visit her online at www.wendytoliver.com.

Everybody Got Their Something

So I totally forgot to mention it before--but yesterday was my book-deal anniversary. Four years ago, on 02.04.2004, I was returning a rental car to John Wayne Airport (yes, there is even a huge bronze statue of The Duke in baggage claim) when my then agent called with the news.

And then--

And then everything goes sort of foggy. I remember lots of squealing and excitement (me) the mention of "St. Martin's Press" and "two-book deal" (him) followed by even louder squealing (me) and then "maybe you should pull over?" (him again).

By the time I made it the drop off point, those poor Avis guys didn't know what to make of me. And after telling my husband and calling my mom, I grew very quite and still, wondering if I should tell anyone else, afraid of breaking the spell since it all seemed surreal. After months of rejections, frustration, and loads of self-doubt, I finally got to that one single "yes!" And even though it's a moment I'll never forget, I didn't feel comfortable spreading the word until I saw it in print.

I can still be like that when it comes to good news, wanting to keep it close, not tell anyone until all the papers are signed. Mostly because--well-- I'm not really sure why. I don't even know where that came from, though I'm blaming my mom. (Hi mom!) And I've no idea how many times my friends and family have heard me say, "Omigod! You'll never believe what just happened--but don't tell anyone--I don't want to jinx it!"

My husband says that the power of "the jinx" is all in my mind. And while I'm sure he's right--what if he's not?

I just can't take that chance.

What about you?  Are you afraid of jinxing things? Or do you just shout it from the roof tops before the print's even dried?

*And, just a reminder--I'm giving away a signed copy of EVERMORE Here!

*And, it's the last day to sign up for signed copies of Ally Carter's awesome books Here!

*Oh, and I'm also blogging HERE today, so if you want, stop by and tell me if you'd want psychic powers, and what you would do with them!

Have a good day everyone!

2nd print run!!!

EVERMORE just went into another print run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picture me happy dancing!

On second thought, don't.

It's not pretty!

Release Day Activities

So yesterday was one of those really great days! You know the kind where you just wake up happy, stay that way throughout, and then go to bed with a smile on your face?

It was pretty much like that!

I guess because it was EVERMORE's official release day, which, let's face it, release day is always pretty exciting, but still, this one was a little more so than usual. I heard from so many excited readers via Myspace, Facebook, my bulletin board, e-mail--I could hardly believe it! (You guys read fast and your kind words mean the world to me! And yes, I will get back to all of you soon!). Not to mention all those awesome teen bloggers who were nice enough to interview me (links in blog posts below and more to come!). And then of course, there's the YA author community in general which is so warm, friendly, and supportive--I'm proud to be a part of it!

Oh, and speaking of cool YA authors, the uber cool Melissa Walker sent me this photo of EVERMORE taken at the B&N in Union Square:

Seriously, how sweet is she?

But the other part of what made the day so great-- is that I got to do a few of my favorite things like: hit the bookstores!! I love bookstores. Always have. I even have this recurring fantasy of owning a little bookstore in a location so remote, with so few  customers, I get to sit at my unused cash register all day and just read!! My husband who, luckily, is a little more practical, business minded, and left-brained than me, assures me this particular fantasy should not be acted on. Anyway, back to the bookstores, well, it didn't really go as I'd planned, so here's the report: some of the B&Ns didn't even get their EVERMORE copies yet! (Gasp!)  Though they assured me they have bunches on order and expect them to arrive "any day now." And then some of the Border's had already either sold out (!) and/or only had one left, but since they're supposed to order more, I'll definitely check back and sign then! And since the area I just happened to be trolling had no independents, I'll be checking in on those later this week!

So, not really getting the signing fix I was after, I moved on to my mom's where I foisted stacks and stacks of bookmarks on her before heading out to a Mexican restaurant for dinner, which, seriously now, is there anything better than that guacamole they make right at your table?

I think not.

And by the time I finally made it home, eager to watch the season 7 disc 5 Buffy DVD that Netflix had so kindly sent me, I found that my awesome editor had sent me this:

That's EVERMORE in the Feb/Mar issue of Justine magazine- chosen as a Page Turner pick! Squee!!

And then after watching The Spike Show, er, Buffy (oh, Spike how I love thee!), I checked my Amazon numbers one last time (I know, I know, but I just can't help myself!) and saw that EVERMORE was in the top 25 books in teen Sci-Fi--

and that's when I went to bed happy!

Oh, and for those of you wanting to get your hands on a signed copy, stop by Stephanie Kuehnert's blog where later today she's kindly featuring me as a Woman Who Rocks (trust me, Stephanie's the one who rocks!), and giving away a copy of EVERMORE to one random commenter!

And speaking of signed copies--don't forget to stop by Free Book Friday Teens for your chance to hear the Ally Carter interview and win one of 4 signed copies of her phenomenal GALLAGHER GIRLS books!

That's it for now--have a good day everyone!

GCC Presents . . .um, Me!!!

Even if you're only a semi-reader of this blog (as opposed to those who eagerly await each and every post--you're out there, right Mom??) then you probably know I've been a member of the awesome group, the Girlfriends Cyber Circuit, for awhile now. You know the one where we interview all sorts of amazing YA authors about their exciting new books, then post those very same interviews on our blogs?

Well, as it happens, this week's featured author is me. Which means I'll be heavily immersed in some serious blog hopping among my fellow GCC sisters.

And with tomorrow being EVERMORE's official release day and all, and since I wanted to come up with some kind of promo worthy type piece for my own blog, I figured I'd take a stab at the very same set of 5 questions I ask all of my GCC sisters to answer!

So here, without further ado, is my own GCC interview of--me!

Here's the story:

Enter an enchanting new world where true love never dies . . .EVERMORE, the first book in
Alyson Noël’s extraordinary new series

Since a horrible accident claimed the lives of her family, Ever can see auras, hear people’s thoughts, and know a person’s entire life story by touch. Going out of her way to avoid human contact and suppress her abilities has branded her as a freak at her new high school—but everything changes when she meets Damen.

Damen Auguste is gorgeous, exotic and wealthy. He’s the only one who can silence the noise and random energy in her head—wielding a magic so intense, it’s as though he can see straight into her soul. As Ever is drawn deeper into his enticing world of secrets and mystery, she’s left with more questions than answers. She has no idea just who he really is—or what he is. The only thing she knows to for sure is she’s falling deeply and helplessly in love with him . . .

Here's the trailer:

Here's where you can read an EXCERPT.

Here's where you can read the REVIEWS (or just look to the right and scroll down!)

Here's the same 5 questions I always ask:

1. Every story has a back story--what's the backstory for your book?

Well, a few years ago I lost 3 people I loved in 5 horrible months, and just when it seemed the dust was beginning to settle, my husband was diagnosed with leukemia and it felt like my entire world was crashing down. A year later, when he was in full remission, I wrote SAVING ZOE and CRUEL SUMMER, both of which explore the subject of grief and unavoidable change. But when it came time to write my next book, I realized I had more to say on the subject, though I wanted to do so in a much different way by giving the story a paranormal twist and pushing the boundaries between life and death, and the story of EVERMORE came pouring out of me!

2. What's your work environment like? Any rituals, totems, or must haves?

I work in a home office that also serves double duty as a work out room. So along with my laptop and desktop, fax, printers, and phone, there's also a treadmill, stationary bike, and green rubber exercise ball, along with an assortment of gadgets promising to build a trimmer, stronger, healthier me--providing it actually gets used of course!  There's a small TV on the wall in case I need to watch Oprah or something, some book shelves overflowing to the point where all titles are now double stacked (with the ones I invariably need shoved deep into the back), and while my desk is by all accounts, made of standard issue stuff, it does sport a tiny photo of my husband and I taken a few years back when I was experimenting with super short hair, a small, red, Oscar Meyer Weiner mobile that he picked up for me when he was visiting our niece and nephew in Oregon, which sort of serves as a symbol for how I managed to find the one person on this entire planet who totally gets me, and a Dwight (from The Office) bobble head doll who's all knowing, all seeing, slightly judgmental, gaze keeps me in line.

3. If you could live inside any book, which would it be?

Okay, now see? This is one of those questions that I felt so cool for asking my fellow GCCers to answer--and yet, now that I'm supposed to answer it myself--I'm totally stumped.  I mean, should I say SCRUPLES the old Judith Krantz novel I read over and over again as a teen, dreaming of a life just like Billy Ikehorn's? Or perhaps, WUTHERING HEIGHTS, because of all that drama and passion and those damp, foggy, moors!!  Or, maybe HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON, because then I could have my own purple crayon and draw whatever I want, or maybe FRANNY AND ZOEY because I've never had such intellectual conversations with my brother, but that's probably because I don't have a brother . . . or maybe--oh-- OH!--I've got it! I can't believe I didn't see it before, it's been staring me in the face all this time-- BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S!!! Totally. No contest. But only if I get to be Holly!!

4. What book rocked your world growing up?

Anything by Judy Blume, with a special shout out to DEENIE, FOREVER, and ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET

In fact, Judy Blume still rocks my world! I met her two years ago at the ALA conference in DC and she was even more awesome than I hoped she would be!

5. If you could visit any time, place, or person--what, where, or who would it be?

No hesitation on this one, Renaissance Florence, all the way!  I'd hang out with da Vinci, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Raphael . . . all of those amazing artists and inventors--but only if i can bring my modern day grooming habits with me! They weren't exactly known for their fresh breath and regular bathing!

It's heeeeere!!!!

Last night, in a fit of pre-pub nervousness (or was it just random curiosity? It's hard to tell the difference these days), I got out of my sweat pants, put on some actual clothes, (including lip-gloss!) and hit a few local bookstores, where I casually stalked the aisles, looking to see if EVERMORE, (which officially pubs this Tuesday!) has made it onto the shelves.

And---

wait for it----
it has!

Barnes & Noble had it both end capped and on the YA shelves and Border's had it end capped and on the Fantasy shelves- so note to Border's shoppers, EVERMORE may not be shelved with my other books, but instead on the fantasy shelves. You know, where Stephenie Meyer lives?!

So basically, what all of this means is I pretty much plan to spend the next several days hitting all the book stores, Targets, and Wal Marts, within a hundred mile radius (not really exaggerating on that one), looking for copies to sign and add shiny new EVERMORE/BLUE MOON bookmarks to. And while I'm not busy with that, I'll be traveling the blogoshpere, giving interviews for my fellow GCC sisters--some of which are giving away signed copies, so stay tuned for that!

Oh, and of course there's that pesky matter of the BLUE MOON copy edits due in just a few days . . .but we won't talk about that . . .

But, until then, here's an interview I just did for the lovely Arya

And here's a new review on EVERMORE over a Lastexilewords

Oh, and while you're blog hopping, be sure to check out THE READ CARPET, a new site for all things YA- discussions, podcasts,
 interviews, etc!

That's it for now--Happy Sunday Everyone!
