Ooblek!!

After looking at these pictures, you cannot be blamed for asking yourself:

What is this man doing?

Well, the answer, dear reader, is:

Ooblek.

That man has made himself a big bowl of Ooblek--which, for those of you who missed that day in science class or summer camp--or, skipped that particular Dr. Seuss book where it found its fame, you can learn more about it and get the recipe to make your own bowl of Ooblek HERE.

So why should you even bother with making Ooblek, thinking about Ooblek, reading any further about Ooblek, much less clicking that link??

Because Ooblek is not only fascinating and fun, but it provides a really important life lesson as well. One that twelve-year-old Soul Catcher, Riley Bloom, is forced to confront during the course of her latest, tropical island, Soul Catching, adventure in SHIMMER (in stores 03.15.11!)!

You see, Ooblek is both soft and liquidy, which would seem as though you should be able to make a fist and pound your way through it, right?

But Ooblek, like life, will not be forced. If you try to pound your way through it, you won't make a dent, your fist will not only not penetrate, but will actually bounce back!

But if you soften your fingers and tread gently, your hand will easily find its way through, all the way to your final destination--er, the bottom of the bowl.

So go ahead, make yourself some Ooblek and try it for yourself! And for added fun, add a little food coloring to really jazz it up!

And speaking of SHIMMER/Ooblek . . .

Next week I'll be signing copies of my books both here:

Tuesday, March 15, 6:00 PM
SHIMMER Talk/Reading/Signing
El Camino North Shopping Center
2615 Vista Way
Oceanside, CA 92054
(760) 529-0106

& here:

Thursday, March 17, 7:00 PM
SHIMMER Talk/Reading/Signing
1010 El Camino Real
Menlo Park, CA 94025
(650) 324-4321

Hope to see you there!

Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Alyson
:)

Note: A special thanks to my husband who not only prepared the Ooblek but who also braved the Ooblek so that I could act as photographer. No hands were damaged in this experiment.

Golden Slumbers

(blog title courtesy of The Beatles)

(28 more days!!)

So, after weeks and weeks of what pretty much amounted to non-stop, book related travel, I dedicated yesterday to laziness. My one and goal being that I'd fail to accomplish much of anything.

I started my day on the couch, drinking coffee and getting all caught up on the first 3 episodes of this season's Bored to Death, but then, it wasn't long before it started to feel like a sick day. And since I wasn't sick, and since I'm really not that great at daytime couch-lounging (I get antsy), my husband and I decided to head out in search of shopping and eating (lots and lots of eating!), making sure to return home in time to watch episode 4 of Bored to Death along with the latest Dexter, and, while it may not have turned out to be quite the "do absolutely nothing" day I'd envisioned, it was pretty dang great all the same!

But today I'm back in business. In fact, I'll be heading to LA this afternoon as tomorrow at O'Dark Hundred I'm scheduled for a full morning of back-to-back interviews for a TV/Radio satellite tour.

Basically I'll head for a studio in the early AM (my wake-up call is set for 3:15--yikes!), where I'll get made-up, miked-up, and lit, so I can chat with various people I can't actually see, answering questions about RADIANCE, Riley, and more, that'll be beamed out all over the nation.

The full schedule is below, and though it looks daunting, I have to say that I'm actually pretty excited about it--well, other than the wake up call that is ...

I'll let you know how it goes!

5:20–5:30 AM WVES-FM, “Country Mornings,” Norfolk, VA (LIVE RADIO)
5:40–5:50 AM WRAL-CBS, “WRAL Morning News,” Raleigh, NC (LIVE TV)
5:50–6:00 AM KJAG-AM, “Morning Show,” Salinas (Wichita), KS (TAPED)
6:35–6:40 AM WFTX-FOX, “Fox 4 Morning Blend,” Ft. Meyers, FL (TAPED TV)
6:40–6:50 AM WTSP-CBS, “Tampa Bay’s 10,” Tampa, FL (TAPED TV)
6:50–7:00 AM WCIV-ABC, “Lowcountry Live,” Charleston, SC (TAPED TV)
7:00–7:10 AM “Get Connected,” Syndicated in Regional South East (TAPED TV)
7:10–7:15 AM WSET-ABC, “Living in the Heart of Virginia,” Roanoke, VA (TAPED TV) 7:20–7:30 AM Radio TV Daily, “Shannon’s Corner,” National (TAPED RADIO)
7:50–8:00 AM KCTU-ION, “Your Hour,” Wichita, KS (TAPED TV)
8:00–8:10 AM WTVR-FM, “Middays with Kat,” Richmond, VA (TAPED RADIO)
8:10–8:15 AM KCMN-AM, “Morning Show,” CO Springs, CO (LIVE RADIO)
8:15–8:20 AM KTNV-ABC, “The Morning Blend,” Las Vegas, NV (TAPED TV)
8:20–8:25 AM “The New Englanders,” Syndicated in Regional Boston (TAPED TV) 8:40–8:45 AM KGUN-ABC, “The Morning Blend,” Tucson, AZ (TAPED TV)
9:23–9:30 AM WGHP-FOX, “Fox 8 Noon News,” Greensboro, NC (LIVE TV)
9:30–9:40 AM KHHT-FM, “Weekend Show,” Los Angeles, CA (TAPED RADIO)
9:50–10:00 AM WCPO-ABC, “9 News at Noon,” Cincinnati, OH (LIVE TV)

Whew!

Have a great day, everyone!

Lady Grinning Soul

If you follow me on Twitter you probably already saw this, but if not, then let me just say that yesterday was one of the best mail days ever!

Partly because THE IMMORTALS boxed set arrived!!

Which just so happens to come with a super gorgeous poster that is definitely destined for a spot on my office wall just as soon as I can get it framed!

And partly because my awesome editor sent me a hot-off-the-press copy of NIGHT STAR.

After all these books (13 published and 2 in production!) that first glimpse of the latest release never gets old!

Also, just wanted to shout out a big, glittery THANKS to my Danish readers for making SHADOWLAND debut at #2 on your bestsellers list!! I will be headed your way on November 24th (details coming soon!)- and am really looking forward to meeting all of you!

And speaking of Denmark, I just leaned that Riley's series will be translated there as well--I'm so excited about that and I really hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

And, last but not least, tomorrow I'm headed for Seattle for the WLMA/WALE conference where I'm giving a presentation on writing for teens as well as a breakfast keynote speech on Saturday morning, and I'm really looking forward to it!

And now, I'll leave you with more photos from Frankfurt (courtesy of my Bulgarian publisher-Softpress)!

Wow.

A lot has happened in the last 10 days, and since I just got home and am a wee bit jet lagged, I figured I'd let the pictures do the talking if it's okay with you.

And another big sparkly THANKS to all the lovely readers who showed up at my signings, including the students of Ricards school in England--you were such a wonderful audience--and your purple blazers were amazing!

Paradise Circus

(blog title courtesy of Massive Attack)

Wow. Things have been crazy/busy here at Casa Noël.

I'm wrapping up the final book in THE IMMORTALS series (yes, we finally have a title--I'm just waiting to announce it), wrapping up the summer (can't believe it's almost over!), still unpacking from our move (the boxes are multiplying!), gearing up to head off on the Smart Chicks Tour (hope to see you on one of the stops!), and, in the midst of all that, the KISSES FROM HELL anthology was released last week!

My story, BRING ME TO LIFE, got a nice review from The Examiner who said:

"Alyson Noel’s Bring Me To Life is particularly enthralling, with a setting reminiscent of old British romances like Wuthering Heights and a creepy, unrelenting fog that will chill your bones."

And RADIANCE, book 1 in Riley's new series was released yesterday, to lots of great reviews (see blog post below), including this one from AllyKatz.com that just came in, saying:

"I must admit there is not one thing I don't like about this book. I just listed all the pros and there are no cons. I would rate it FIVE STARS."

Oh, and the RADIANCE tattoos have also arrived, and I will be passing them out on The Smart Chicks Tour (There will be lots of great swag on that tour--I'm telling you, it is not to be missed!)

(Um, that is my very pale wrist looking much cooler now thanks to the tattoo!)

Okay, there's probably more, but that's all I can remember at the moment due to all the busyness, so I'll leave it at that and say--have a great night!!

More RADIANCE Goodness!!

Okay, so as of today, it's officially 2 weeks until RADIANCE, book 1 in THE IMMORTALS spin-off series, hits the stores (where did last week go, anyway??) and I have to admit, I'm starting to get pretty dang excited about it!

More reviews are coming in all the time, like this one from Publisher's Weekly that says:

“Riley, who appeared in ghost form to her older sister, Ever, in Noël's bestselling Evermore, takes center stage in this middle-grade spinoff, first in a planned series. . .her wit, attitude, and maturation should have readers gladly following her into the second installment.”--Publisher’s Weekly

And then this one from Bookwormygirl:

“I loved this book! . . .Ms. Noel's writing is fluid and flawless. She truly captures the thoughts of a 12 year old girl - I loved her inner monologues - they brought a smile to my face more than once. This series is going to be a treat not only for the new fans I'm sure Ms. Noel will acquire in young tweens, but I can guarantee it will be an instant hit with her YA and adult fan base. Loved it.”--Bookwormygirl

And then there's all this one from IB Book Blogging:

“Radiance is the first book in a spin-off of the immortals series. Although I enjoy the immortals series, I have to admit that I was a little skeptical starting out with this book, as I thought Riley's voice would be too young for me. Boy, was I sure proved wrong by little miss Riley! I absolutely loved her voice and her inner monologue. . . Overall, this was a light, fun read and I would recommend it to any tweens and young teens that love paranormal books! I am eagerly anticipating the next Riley book and I hope it will be just as good as Radiance.”-5 Stars—IB Book Blogging

And this is what Kirkus had to say:

“A tale for lovers of the genre . . . For those preteens who like a mild supernatural adventure with romantic overtones, you go, ghost.” —Kirkus Reviews

And so, yeah, did I mention how excited I am?

Even though I'm not a mom (though I am an aunt to many!), I still liken it to sending a kid out into the world for their first day of school. Which, following that logic would make RADIANCE, technically speaking anyway, child number 12!

I mean, you'd think by the time you get to the 12th one you'd become so blase you might even forget to arrange for the carpool or to pack a nutritious lunch, but Riley is special to me. She is one of my most favorite (see, good thing I'm not a mom, I pick favorites!) characters to write, and I guess that's why I'm so excited to send her off into the world--to give her a chance to go out on her own and tell her own story!

And yes, I know I keep showing you this video over and over again, and if you've already seen it, then I'll just say it hasn't changed, it's very much exactly the same as the last time you viewed it, but still, I'm going to embed it here anyway, because I just so happen to really, really like it, so here goes. You are under no obligation to click play. Riley would very much like it (and you!) if you clicked play, but she will bear you no ill will if you don't--though, again, doing so will make her very, very happy.

Just saying.

Okay, that's all for now--back to (still!) UNTITLED IMMORTALS #6!!

Have a great day, everyone!

RADIANCE--coming soon!!

Wow, seems I've been so busy working on UNTITLED IMMORTALS #6 (yes, we are nearing a real, honest to goodness title, which I will hopefully announce soon-ish!), spending time with my niece & nephew who are here for their annual 5 week summer visit, and dealing with a nasty gum infection (best to just leave it at that!), that it almost slipped my mind that RADIANCE, book 1 in Riley's new series, will be in stores soon as August 31 is now just 3 weeks away (Yikes & Yay all in one!)!

I may have mentioned it before, but I have to say that writing Riley's story turned out to be some of the most fun I've ever had writing a book, so I really hope readers enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it!

The reviews are already starting to roll in, and I couldn't be happier with them:

Alyson did a great job writing Radiance. It was what I expected and more. . .She was able to catch that young voice and portray it beautifully. . Radiance is a great summer read.”--I give it 5 BITES!- Books With Bite

“Another highly creative and well thought out series for Alyson Noel! . . . Noel creates another imaginative world that is so well described it sucked me in from the very beginning. She has a very poetic style of writing, that will appeal to any age. . . I highly recommend.” – Bellas Novella

“Radiance is a sweet story, a perfect summer read… Like the Immortals series, Noel's world building is superb. Radiance was the perfect book to tide me over until the next Immortals book comes out. As far as middle-grade books go, it's one of the best I've read.” I’d so Rather be Reading

“I think I found a great new series with tons of potential, and that series starts with Radiance. . .This book is so cute!”—Bloody Bookaholic

“I loved reading this book! . . . It's beauty and simplicity blend perfectly with romance and humor. I'm sad that I must wait until next year for Shimmer, the sequel. I will definitely miss Riley, Bodhi, and Buttercup! Also the cover is just beautiful!”—Novel Thoughts

“Riley is such a great, refreshing character and I loved her voice. She has some great inner monologues that made me laugh out loud. . .I really enjoyed Radiance. . . I'd definitely recommend YA fans of Alyson Noel to pick it up. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next with Riley and Bodhi.” Mundie Moms
